Bali Day #1, July 7th, 2013

We woke up early mainly to timezone changes/jet lag.  We went down to breakfast and had a hearty breakfast.  I drank black currant juice for the first time.  The buffet had fried rice, fried noodle, white rice with fried/dried onions, fresh cut yellow melon, pineapple, papaya and Honeydew melon.

Towards the end of Breakfast, we were surprised by the arrival of her Dad.  The hotel is strategically located in Jimbaran Bay, Sani's village where her family lives.   Most of the staff who work at the resort are somehow or in some way related to her.  Normally they end up being introduced as cousins, aunts or uncles.  She has a very large family, over 400 people.

Her Dad is also the Hindu High Priest for this part of the island.  I was surprised that he came because he is normally very busy with ceremonies.

In any event, he has loaned us his SUV (Toyota Kijang) for our trip complete with a driver.  The driver's name is Komang and he is one of my wife's cousins (Don't act surprised).

Komang arrived a short time later and we loaded up in the Kijang and headed to the Money Exchange in Kuta to exchange dollars for Indonesia Rupiah.  The exchange rate is better if large, clean, unmarked bills are presented.  We did just that and received 9900 Rupiah per dollar based on each $100USD  bill. We exchanged $2000 USD for 19,600,000 Rp.  We were Millionaires!

From the Money Exchange, we headed over to our favorite shop, Matahari.  It is a grocery store in Kuta.  I specifically went in to buy some Kacang Pedas (hot peanuts).  We bought some mangoes and some food items.

From Matahari, which was located in Kuta (area of the large Bali Bombing from 2002), we drove to the Tiara Dewati in Denpasar.  This was an old favorite place to eat due to low prices and large portions.  I ordered Nasi Goreng Ayam Pedas (chicken fried rice extra hot) and Satay Ayam (chicken satay).

My food tasted pretty good but others were not as satisfied.  Overall for the price, could not be beat.

On our way out, I hit the Dunkin' Donuts.  They offer coffee in one size, about 12 ounces.  NO CREME or MILK available.  Needless to say, skip DD here.

We headed back towards the hotel and stopped in at a very large grocery store called Carrefour.  It was huge, had great prices.   We bought two cases of water and a case of Milo (shelf storable, no refrigerator needed.)

We headed back to Sari Segara and decided to visit the beach.  We stayed at the beach and played in the surf, hunted for shells and played in the sand.

We headed back to the hotel to take showers and get ready for dinner.  When we were finished with showers, we were all too tired to go anywhere.

Somewhere during the shower taking, Sani's dad showed up with his son Jerman. We invited him in and he saw how tired we were and volunteered to get us dinner.

He brought back some Mie Ayam, Chicken Satay and some other good food.  We went straight to bed after that.

The end of day 1.
